Unit Overview: In this unit I read the novel, The Outsiders. I worked in groups as a Reading Circle to complete different tasks for each section or chapter of the book.My jobs included Summarizer, Literary Luminary, Word Wizard, Connection Maker, and Discussion Director. Each job focused on a different standard or skill. At the end of the unit I took an exam, and completed two individual projects that I have selected from four choices-- 1. a wanted poster for one of the characters, 2. a soundtrack of five song selections for the story, 3. a an interview with one of the characters, or 4. a book jacket with original chapter titles. I have selected a wanted poster for one of the characters, and a soundtrack of five song selections for the story.

Enduring Understanding:

  • How does wealth (or poverty) affect a person’s social status?

Wealth and poverty affect the person's personality, their reality around them, their society will not be the same, the education will be at a different level, their social status would become different because that's the life and the reality they have been with.

  • Does family always have to be made up of relatives?

Family doesn't always have to be made up of relatives, it can be a close friend that always be there for you.

Reflection on Progress Towards the Standards:

Strengths: I think my strengths are analyzing how a modern work of fiction relates to themes, ideas, characters, and events from your life, the world, and other literature.

Improvements: I think my improvement should participate in meaningful discussions with peers in which you analyze and share ideas about the text.
